## The Frustration Is Real
You are trying to watch a movie. Your kids are gaming. Your spouse is on a video call. And everything is buffering. We hear this story from Savannah homeowners every single week. Before you throw money at a new router, try these free fixes first. Nine times out of ten, at least one of them will make a noticeable difference.
## Fix 1: Move Your Router
This one sounds obvious, but most people set up their router wherever the cable company installed the modem, which is usually in a corner of the house or inside a closet. Wi-Fi signals radiate outward from the router in all directions, so placing it in a corner means half of that signal is going into the walls or outside.
**Move your router to the most central location possible.** The middle of your house, elevated on a shelf or mounted on a wall, with nothing blocking it. Avoid placing it near microwaves, baby monitors, or cordless phones, as these all operate on similar frequencies and cause interference.
## Fix 2: Switch to the Right Frequency Band
Modern routers broadcast on two frequencies: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Most people leave everything on the default and never think about it. Here is the difference:
- **2.4GHz:** Slower speeds but longer range. Better for devices far from the router.
- **5GHz:** Faster speeds but shorter range. Better for streaming, gaming, and video calls when you are close to the router.
If your router shows two separate network names (like "HomeNetwork" and "HomeNetwork-5G"), connect your main devices to the 5GHz network for better performance. Leave smart home devices, doorbell cameras, and gadgets in distant rooms on the 2.4GHz network.
## Fix 3: Kick Off the Freeloaders
Check how many devices are connected to your network. You might be surprised. Most households we visit have 20 to 40 connected devices: phones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, gaming consoles, security cameras, smart speakers, thermostats, and more. Each one takes a slice of your bandwidth.
**Log into your router** (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser) and look at the connected devices list. Disconnect anything you do not recognize and change your Wi-Fi password. While you are there, set up a separate guest network for visitors instead of giving out your main password.
## Fix 4: Update Your Router Firmware
Just like your phone and computer, your router gets software updates that fix bugs, improve performance, and patch security holes. Most people never update their router firmware because it does not happen automatically.
**Log into your router admin panel and look for a firmware update option.** It is usually under "Administration" or "System" settings. If an update is available, install it. This alone has fixed slow Wi-Fi issues for more clients than we can count.
## Fix 5: Change the Wi-Fi Channel
In neighborhoods and apartment complexes around Savannah, dozens of Wi-Fi networks overlap and compete with each other. Think of it like a highway: if everyone is in the same lane, traffic slows to a crawl.
**Use a free app like WiFi Analyzer (Android) or open the Wireless Diagnostics tool on Mac** to see which channels are congested. Then log into your router and manually select a less crowded channel. For 2.4GHz, channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only ones you should use. For 5GHz, the options vary, but pick whichever channel shows the least competing networks.
## When You Actually Do Need New Hardware
If none of these fixes help and your router is more than 4 or 5 years old, it might genuinely be time for an upgrade. Wi-Fi 6 routers (look for "802.11ax" or "Wi-Fi 6" on the box) handle multiple devices much better than older models. For larger homes, a mesh system like TP-Link Deco or Ubiquiti UniFi is far better than a single router with a range extender.
